The first division in paint types is interior versus exterior. Using one for the other’s application creates predictable failures.
Interior paints are formulated for enclosed, temperature-controlled environments. Interior paints are built around coverage, sheen quality, colour accuracy, washability, and low-VOC safety. UV exposure, rain, and temperature cycling will degrade interior paint. It’s not built for any of them. Interior paint on an exterior wall fails within one monsoon cycle.

These are the exterior paint specifications that matter in Indian conditions. Interior emulsion is what most Indian home walls get painted with. It’s water-based, washable, and comes in finishes from flat matte to high sheen.

Emulsion is water-based and designed for walls and ceilings. Matte to high sheen, hundreds of colours. Enamel is oil-based and designed for metal surfaces, timber doors, and surfaces that need a very hard, glossy finish. The two are not interchangeable. Enamel on a wall is unnecessarily hard and difficult to repaint. Emulsion on metal provides inadequate adhesion and corrosion resistance.
On new or bare surfaces, yes. Primer improves adhesion and seals the substrate. The finish paint covers evenly because of the primer, not in spite of skipping it. On previously painted surfaces in good condition, a light sand to break the gloss is often sufficient. On specific substrates like bare metal or concrete, a substrate-specific primer is not optional. Adhesion without it is inadequate.
