The cheapest makeover I’ve ever seen cost ₹1,100. A friend in Bhopal had a dull rented 1BHK, a landlord who said “no nails,” and exactly one free Sunday.
She painted a single deep stripe round the room at shelf height. Her mother visited the next week and asked if she’d bought new furniture. She hadn’t.
Good wall paint design ideas do exactly that. The room changes. Nothing else moves.
Excitement is the enemy here. In one month of 2022 I painted a zigzag in the hall and polka dots in the study. My father walked through and said “circus khol rahe ho?” Fair point.
One idea per room is plenty. My father’s circus line still rings in my ears whenever I’m tempted to do two walls. Plain walls around it, always.
Ugly window grill, zero budget for curtains? That was my cousin’s situation in Nashik last March.
She ran a fat border round the frame, eight inches or so, and the painter thought she was mad until he stepped back.
Her colour was Acorn. Sit on her sofa and the neem tree outside looks framed, like something off a gallery wall in Kala Ghoda. The tree helps (it was there first).
Our Ghaziabad flat has a 9-foot ceiling that somehow feels like 7. Tall stripes, a foot wide each, fixed that for us. I picked a pale biscuit and a sand barely one notch deeper (my wife still can’t see the difference up close).
A friend tried black and white stripes in Ghaziabad too. Looked like a pedestrian crossing.
Open shelves full of books and brass pieces can look cluttered against white. Paint only the back panel of each shelf in a deep colour.
My neighbour used Gunmetal behind her grandmother’s brass lotas, and at night they practically glow. Gorgeous.
My rule for bedroom wall painting came from one bad week in 2021. I’d painted a sharp zigzag opposite the bed, and every night it felt like the wall was shouting at me. Repainted by Sunday.
No headboard? Paint one. A soft rectangle in Lullaby Blue, a little wider than the bed and about four feet high, looks surprisingly finished. Hotel-ish.
Mine cost about ₹400 in paint plus one argument about the edges being straight.
It wasn’t, by about a centimetre. Nobody has noticed in two years.
My sister has a reading chair by her bedroom window in Chennai. She painted both walls of that corner in Chamois, and the ceiling patch above it too.
It feels like its own little nook now. Her phone stays face-down there. Mostly.
Most people forget the top of the wall. A strip about six inches deep running round all four walls, tucked just under the ceiling, gives a plain bedroom the look of an old bungalow with cornice moulding.
Go one shade deeper than the walls. Very subtle.
Got a Saturday and two sample tins? These DIY wall painting ideas need no painter. Low risk, low cost.
Old flats in Kolkata and Chennai often have scuffed walls along the floor. Years of mops and chair legs did that.
A darker band about ten inches high hides all of it. Ours went on in Hacienda, and the mop marks vanished overnight. Instant fix.
A spirit level helps. My first line wobbled near the fridge.
My nephew draws on walls. Every wall. So we gave him one, a door-sized section of his room in blackboard paint, and he’s been drawing cricket grounds and dinosaurs on it since he was five.
Messy, happy.
The other walls are clean for the first time in years. Small miracle.
Front doors get all the attention. Inside a bedroom, though, the back of the door is a big blank rectangle only you see. Mine’s a soft mustard now. Closing it at night feels oddly cheerful.
My aunt’s mandir in Varanasi used to be a wooden shelf screwed onto a bare wall. Then she flipped her biggest steel parat upside down against the plaster, traced round it, and filled the half-circle with soft saffron.
My aunt in Varanasi drew hers using the rim of a big steel parat as a guide. Clever lady.
Diyas look beautiful against it at sandhya time. Keep the rest of the wall cream.
Duplex homes and independent houses usually have one long staircase wall nobody knows what to do with. Paint the lower part darker, following the slope of the stairs.
It hides the hand marks from everyone who leans on that wall going up. Practical too.
My uncle’s house in Dehradun has this in a muted green. Twelve years of grandchildren, and the wall still looks clean. Remarkable, really.
Small bathrooms can take a painted tile-look grid above the real tiles. Just thin darker lines, drawn with a ruler.
It sounds fiddly. In a 5 by 7 bathroom it took my friend in Pune about three hours and one cup of chai.
Kitchens? Ours is a long galley kitchen in Ghaziabad, and the bare side wall used to look like a hospital corridor. One saffron stripe at the height of the gas stove changed that.
We used a washable JK Maxx emulsion. Tadka splashes? A damp cloth, done.
I carry a cushion cover to the paint shop now. Sounds silly. The man at the counter in Raj Nagar laughed the first time, then started doing the same with his own customers.
Check at night too. After 9 pm, warm LEDs shift colours more than you’d expect. My crisp grey turned muddy. Soft blue went lilac.
Large murals are worth handing over. So is anything up a tall staircase, where ladders and Sunday enthusiasm don’t mix well. Be honest.
The JK Maxx dealer near you usually knows a painter or two who does design work. My Bhopal friend insisted on visiting one of her painter’s finished flats before hiring him. Phone photos can hide wobbly lines.
A painted headboard rectangle, in my experience. Only tape and a level. Start there.
A soft block behind the bed, like my Lullaby Blue one. The zigzag taught me the rest. White ceiling.
My Bhopal friend’s landlord agreed once she promised to repaint before leaving. Ask first. Keep colours light.
